    ACADEMY INFORMATION & SUMMARY

The STEM program at Summer Creek Middle is a new innovative program of choice in Crowley ISD that is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. We are excited to be in our second year of the program and to have over 130 students participating in the STEM program during the 2016-17 school year. This program is geared toward students that have interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The goal of the program is to engage students with an interest in the STEM fields in their core area classes through curriculum integrated with STEM concepts.

Students that are enrolled in the STEM program are full time students at Summer Creek. STEM students are blocked in their 4 core area (Math, Science, Social Studies, and English/Language Arts) with all STEM students. Teachers in the STEM program gear their lessons to the STEM content when applicable and in addition work to build critical thinking, communication and problem solving skills. Students in the STEM program are able to choose their electives and can participate in all extracurricular activities such as band, athletics, theater arts, and all other campus based student organizations.

Research shows that jobs in STEM fields are in demand in the 21st century workforce and the STEM program will work to expose students to careers in STEM areas through the use of career exploration, guest speakers, and field trips. We hope to expose students to career paths and educate them on the education path they must take to achieve those positions.

In addition to being the home of the middle school STEM program, Summer Creek Middle School is an AVID demonstration school. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program that is implemented campus wide that is designed to teach students strategies for organization, note taking, and questioning and inquiry that will assist them as they prepare for high school and college. The goal is also to have a college bound atmosphere where students are exposed to information on different colleges and discussions on how to get there. We hope to educate students on strategies that will assist them to be successful in college as well as expose them to different college opportunities that are out there.

The Staff at Summer Creek is very excited about the opportunity to have this program at our campus. We are thrilled to watch the program grow and develop into a culture that engages students and develops them into lifelong learners. We are here to serve our students and offer them information, skills and strategies that will help them prepare for High School, College and beyond.
