What is a District of Innovation?
The District of Innovation concept, passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842
, gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas' open-enrollment charter schools. To access these flexibilities, a school district must adopt an innovation plan, as set forth in the Texas Education Code chapter 12A.
Crowley ISD's Exploration Process
The Board of Trustees for Crowley ISD chose to explore this opportunity for flexibility to create new opportunities to help us meet our mission of providing students with excellence in education so that all students achieve their full potential.
In a resolution passed by the School Board on December 1, 2016, Trustees voted unanimously (6-0) to initiate the process to consider becoming a District of Innovation.
An advisory committee appointed by the School Board approved a District of Innovation Plan on February 20, 2017. That plan was posted online for 30 days before going to the School Board for final approval on March 30, 2017. See the District of Innovation plan
