Profile of a Successful Global Prep Student

  • Student working on homework

Global Prep Academy (GPA) serves 7-12 grade students as a CISD school of choice. The program blends the flexibility of online virtual learning with real-life peer-to-peer and student-to-teacher interaction. GPA classes are taken online through Connections Academy where each course is taught by a specific content teacher.

Students physically complete their coursework in a relaxed classroom setting where they have direct access to a classroom teacher, learning coaches and their peers. With the academy located inside the B.R. Johnson Career & Tech Center, high school students are able to have the option of a blended schedule that can include dual credit courses, career and technical education and extracurricular activities. The content is rigorous, but engaging, and helps prepare students well for the structure of college learning.

Core Qualities of a Global Prep Student
    Independent Learning
In a traditional classroom, learning is given by the teacher. In GPA, students seek out to learn the content provided in their online lessons. While assistance is available through course teachers, online tutoring and learning coaches, students are ultimately responsible for completing their work with excellence and on their own ability.

    Self-Motivation

GPA class times are not structured where students receive particular tasks to complete. Students receive a daily checklist of assignments, but it is completely up to the student to log in, get to work, fight off distractions and stay focused.

    Self-Advocacy
Students in the program must be able to ask the right questions and seek help when needed. This requires being willing to call their online teacher, asking for specific help from a learning coach or taking the initiate to plan how to bring up any low course grades.

Is Global Prep Academy right for me?
In addition to the core qualities, here are a few attributes that can help you determine if GPA is the best academic environment for you. Students who are successful:
         • Demonstrate effective organizational and time-management skills
         • Prefer an individualized mode of learning
         • Have demonstrated successful previous performance in content area courses
         • Have positive recommendations of teachers and counselors
         • Are willing to contribute in an online collaborative environment
         • Are good at reading and writing
         • Demonstrate the discipline to study without external reminders
         • Do not need the stimulation of a traditional class
         • Are excited about and fairly comfortable with technology
         • Are comfortable asking for help and willing to be vocal when there are problems or questions

If you struggle in these areas, have difficulty staying organized and on task, behind on any high school credits or learn best through hands-on, tactile learning, then Global Prep Academy may not be the best fit. However, if the thought of taking charge of your own learning excites you, then GPA may be the place for you!
