What Is Your Legacy? 
Presenter: Dr. Nathanial Hearne

On the day you were born, your legacy on earth began. Everyone will leave a legacy. It may be positive, or it may be negative, but you will be remembered for something. Dr. Hearne, the author of "Friday Night Lights: Untold Stories from Behind the Lights", chronicles the stories, the approach to success, and lessons learned through his unique perspective on what happened behind the lights at Permian High School (MOJO). This perspective in combination with his 30 plus years in public education as a teacher, coach, and administrator provides the foundation for this dynamic presentation on "What is Your Legacy." Participants will be engaged, empowered, and elevated to come to a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the importance of living and leaving a positive legacy in their personal and professional lives.

Amplifying Student Voice and Choice Using Tech Tools!

Participants will learn about ways to utilize various tools to differentiate instruction while providing students with ample opportunities to use their voice and give them choices in their learning. Some of the tools teachers will have a chance to explore and experience are hyperdocs, Flipgrid, Nearpod, Parlay for class discussions and many more. Teachers will walk away having tried these tools and with additional resources to try in the future. This session is geared for 6th-12th grade teachers. 

Teaching Test Taking Strategies

As teachers, we sometimes struggle to actually teach our students how to take the test because we do not know which strategy is best for them. In this session, you will learn multiple strategies that can be taught throughout the year that are based in the concept of critical thinking and "chunking" the information. This session does not offer a one-size-fits-all strategy, but multiple.

In this mini AVID training session, we will focus on understanding WICOR and how it applies to the classroom. The five components of WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) will be discussed briefly to provide strategies for implementation across elementary content areas.

Many factors contribute to the high dropout rate, a severe lack of work-life balance and the inevitable high stress levels teachers feel on the job, to name a few. Because of this, self-care is extremely important for teachers. However, it’s hard for teachers to take care of themselves when their career is taking care of students.

We will go over Class Notebook and the basic features of OneNote. There are lots of instructional tools and resources built into OneNote that can have a huge impact on student learning. Students need to have Office 365 accounts for classroom application or teachers can set up a personal notebook.

OneNote to Rule Them All: Part 2

Must attend Part 1 at 9:25 a.m. to attend this session. We will focus on building a class notebook for teachers to use in class. Teachers are encouraged to bring paper notebooks of years past to map out how they would like their class notebook to be set up. After applying the basic tools and features, we will expand and customize teacher notebooks based on their needs. For Class OneNote, students must have Office 365 accounts. 

The Power of Circles

Restorative Practices is an approach for building community and responding to challenging behavior through authentic dialogue, coming to an understanding and making things right. This session will provide step-by-step instructions for circles that build community, teach restorative concepts and skills and harness the power of restorative circles to set things right when there is conflict. Implementing circles create a calmer and more focused classroom and changes the culture of a school.

Teachers will learn about programs like Skype in the Classroom, Skype a Scientist, multiple organizations that connect teachers around the world for multi-classroom projects, Flipgrid to amplify student voice, Parlay for class discussions, and how to incorporate the UN Sustainable Development goals for students into their classrooms. Teachers will leave with applicable ways to incorporate a more global community into their classroom.  Designed for any content area.

An interactive class for teachers, paraprofessionals and staff that will be interacting with students with visual impairments. The session will provide information on the various roles of the professionals within the vision department, strategies for serving students with various visual impairments, assistive technology/equipment used with VI students and an opportunity to step into your students shoes with simulated vision. 

Literary Strategies that Helps Secondary Science Students with Expository Texts Which Include Graphics
Presenter: Erin Tolman

After elementary school, students are expected to read and comprehend expository texts, but this is problematic for students. Students in elementary schools have become familiar with narrative texts, but as students move on to secondary school they are exposed to expository texts with visualizations for the first time. They are not prepared to read expository text and do not have the necessary literacy strategies to help them to become prepared. Scientific texts with graphics are more problematic for students because it is a complex cognitive test that students need many abilities including linguistic, perceptual, and sensory that students have not fully developed (Roberts, Takahashi, Park, & Stodden, 2012). The purpose of this presentation is to overview and explain two reading strategies: reading around the text and summarizing. In addition, this review will make recommendations for teachers to understand how teaching these two reading strategies will help their students comprehend scientific texts with graphics in a more proficient manor.
