Chakina Watkins wants every student and parent in Crowley ISD to feel seen and represented.

Voters elected Watkins — an author, speaker and founder of a youth cosmetology camp — to the Place 5 seat on the CISD Board of Trustees in May 2025.

Serving as a trustee aligns with the work she already does through the Next Level Cosmetology and Next Level Barbering after-school and summer programs she created for kids.

“I felt like I could make a difference, and it was just the next step,” said Watkins, who also is the mother of a Crowley High School student.

As a trustee, transparency and realness are important to her. She wants students to have a better understanding of the school board’s impact.

“When I was a kid, it was like the school board was this mythical creature — far away,” she said. “I want to bond and have a relationship with each and every student in Crowley ISD.”

Watkins is excited about the College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) programs the district offers and wants to see a pipeline of success include mentors and real job opportunities.

She hopes students can see through her own example that there is more than one way to be successful.

“Your success doesn’t look like anyone else’s,” she said. “Know that each of us are born with greatness inside of us. We’re here to help you accomplish any dream.”

Watkins considers herself unconventional while still respecting tradition, and she is excited to partner with CISD families.

“I didn’t run (for school board) to sit on a high horse or just because we’re a great community,” she said. “I ran to add to that greatness and to show parents and kids that, again, there’s more than one way to do something.”

She loves that Crowley ISD is community-driven and feels like a family.

“That family dynamic is what we need to keep,” she said. “That’s what keeps our school district thriving. I love the family dynamic.”

Watkins, born and raised in Fort Worth, is married with one daughter who is a cheerleader at Crowley High School.

Her cosmetology and barbering camps can be found in Fort Worth ISD schools, the Fort Worth Public Library and recently, internationally, in Kuwait.

The program offers hands-on cosmetology and barbering training and helps students develop an entrepreneurial and career readiness mindset.

Watkins taught the first cosmetology courses offered through Tarrant County College and authored the textbook, “Hair University.” She is an award-winning celebrity hairstylist as well as a licensed faith-based counselor.

Fun Fact: At just 11 years old, Watkins began working as a hair stylist and taking clients.
