Closing the achievement gap, recruiting and retaining the highest quality teachers and strengthening community partnerships are among Dr. La Tonya Woodson-Mayfield’s goals as a Crowley ISD trustee.
“There’s not much these students can’t do,” Mayfield said. “With the proper teaching, reinforcement at home and application outside of school, these children can soar.”
She wants to see CISD become the district of choice for families moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area, as well as for those families within the district who have not experienced CISD programs. For everything the district offers, she’s excited about the marketing of CISD’s academic achievements and industry-leading programs.
“The community plays a vital role in the success of our district and they want to see our schools and our students, in particular, succeed,” she said. “They are energized by the growth of the district and the innovation within our programs, and they are often amazed by our progress. I hear it over and over again from inside and outside the district. I’m so proud of all of us.”
She loves seeing the district’s collaboration with parents and the faith-based and business communities.
“Everyone is a stakeholder and has a different purpose but, ultimately, the goal is that each student is successful, and everyone is contributing to that purpose,” she said.
Mayfield currently serves as the vice president for Global Diversity and Inclusion at Fidelity Investments. She is also a course facilitator at Cornell University for its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Human Resources certification programs.
She previously worked in Human Resources in higher education and served in HR and leadership roles at other Fortune 500 companies.
A first-generation college student, she considers herself a lifelong learner who knows the value of education. Mayfield has a doctorate in Applied Technology, Performance Improvement from the University of North Texas, a master’s degree in Human Resource Management and Training from Amberton University and a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from Texas Christian University.
As a public servant, she serves on the boards of numerous institutions and organizations and is a 2020 graduate of Leadership Fort Worth, an organization that promotes diversity and inclusion in the city of Fort Worth and surrounding communities.
Mayfield, a published author, also is a mother of two children — a Crowley ISD graduate now in college and a current CISD high school student.
Fun Fact: Mayfield, whose friends often compare her to Oprah Winfrey, is an aspiring talk show host. Surviving breast cancer, she said, helped her feel like she can do anything.
