Consent for Student Mental & Health Services
Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas Senate Bill 12 requires schools to notify parents and guardians about routine school-based mental and physical health services provided at school. If you prefer that your child not participate in one or more of these services, you must notify the school in writing using the designated opt-out form. These services are often performed by the school nurse; however, other school staff may also administer first aid or care for ill or injured students when necessary. Unless you submit a written opt-out your child will automatically be allowed to receive the following school-based supports:
Physical Health Services:
- Vision, hearing, and spinal screenings
- Nursing assessments and symptom management (for illness or injury during the school day)
- Basic first aid and minor injury care
- Support for chronic conditions (ex. asthma, diabetes)
- Athletic injury support
Medications will continue to require consents per our district medication administration policy.
Mental Health Services:
- Short-term counseling or check-ins
- Social-emotional learning (SEL) activities
- Emotional support during distress
- Behavioral observations and referrals to outside providers (with separate consent)
Note: Formal medical/psychological diagnoses, prescriptions, or long-term therapy require separate consent.
If You Opt-Out:
- No routine health services will be provided during the school day.
- For non-emergency illness or injury, you must pick up your child and provide outside care.
- In life-threatening emergencies, the school will act regardless of opt-out status.
Parent Rights:
- You may revoke your opt-out at any time in writing.
- The district will notify you of any changes in services related to your child’s well-being.
- You have full access to your child’s education and health records (unless disclosure may risk abuse/neglect).
