Hometown Pride: Sam Pipes

In our latest installment of Hometown Pride, we take a look at Bill R. Johnson CTE Center Global Prep Academy teacher Sam Pipes. Pipes is a 1995 Crowley High School graduate. He also attended Bess Race Elementary School when Jackie Carden was principal and H.F. Stevens Middle School while Richard J. Allie was principal.

Pipes, who began working in the district in 2000 at Oakmont Elementary School teaching content mastery and functional academics, currently helps Global Prep students engage in meaningful learning through computer-delivered curriculum. Prior to his time with Global Prep, Pipes spent 2004 to 2007 working with the Crowley Learning Center where he helped with dropout prevention through the Bridges Program.

During his time as a student at CHS, Pipes was like any other high school kid as he played tuba in the Mighty Eagle Band and was a key member of the Crowley High School PELE program under the guidance of Jacque Linville, who he now works with on a daily basis.

His world forever changed though during his senior year when he was severely injured diving into a lake. Because of the accident, Pipes had to learn how to use a wheelchair to get around town and campus.

“The injury definitely slowed me down, but it did not stop me,” said Pipes.

Fast forward to 2021 and the former Mr. CHS recipient can now be found dancing the night away with his wife GaLynn away from school. By 2022, three out of their four children, James Colton (2017), Gracie (2019) and RyLeigh (2022), will have followed in his footsteps as a Crowley High School graduate.

Pipes’ family has been a centerpiece in Crowley ISD for many years as his mother Evelyn taught fifth grade at Bess Race Elementary from 1985 to 1998, while his sister Dixie helped shape young minds at H.F. Stevens Middle School from 1997 to 2004.

“This place is home. I grew up in Crowley and have always lived here. I have watched this place grow and change so much over the years that it’s both an honor and very humbling to be on this side of the education process now. It’s really pretty cool that all of our kids have lettermen jackets that match mine,” said Pipes.
