Bill R. Johnson CTE Campus Hosts SkillsUSA Competition

Crowley ISD’s Bill R. Johnson Career and Technology Education Center hosted the SkillsUSA Arts and Audio Visual competition for area schools on Friday.

SkillsUSA Students from about a dozen schools, including campuses in Mansfield, Fort Worth and Burleson, competed in events such as TV production, advertising design, animation, photography and digital cinema production.

“I like all the hands-on experience,” Loyd Cranson, a Crowley High School student, said of participating in SkillsUSA competitions. “We get a lot of that here.”

Cranson and Michael McDonald, also a Crowley High student, developed a short film several days ago that they then pitched to judges as part of the digital cinema production contest.

Cranson and McDonald said they’ve gained leadership experience and learned how to better manage their time by working on the project.

“We’ve learned how to go out there and direct people and actually get things done,” McDonald said.

Kady Donaghey, BRJ CTE Center principal, said it’s an honor for the school to host the competition, where students get the chance to demonstrate the skills they learn in their programs.

“What I love most is that kids are using industry skills and real-world applications when competing in these events,” she said.

Hosting the contest at the CTE Center also gives the district a chance to showcase its exceptional faculty members and facilities.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry that works to ensure the nation has the skilled workforce it needs to stay competitive. It serves teachers as well as high school and college students preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations and for further education.
