CISD's Smart Energy Use is Making An Early Impact

In just the first six months of Crowley ISD’s energy conservation program, the district has saved more than $121,900 and conserved enough energy to remove 137 automobiles from highways for a year.

The program, which began in June, was implemented through a partnership with Cenergistic, the leading organizational behavior-based energy conservation company whose energy management program has saved more than $4 billion for educational and complex organizations.

The program works to reduce consumption of electricity, natural gas, fuel oil and water through changes in organizational and human behavior. Cenergistic’s conservation experts are working closely with CISD personnel to audit buildings for the most efficient operation and to train personnel to control energy use wherever possible.

According to Cenergistic’s data, Crowley ISD saved 873,000 kWh of electricity and 32,000 CCFs of natural gas from June to December. These energy savings are equal to:

  • Preventing 656 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions
  • Removing 137 automobiles for an entire year
  • Planting 16,820 tree seedlings for 10 years

“These savings are a direct result of students and staff members working together to conserve resources,” Superintendent Dr. Dan Powell said. “This also provides a learning opportunity for students to see the value and rewards of using energy wisely.”

All costs of the Cenergistic program come from the existing utility budget, with savings guaranteed to more than pay for the program. Additional savings can be redirected to other parts of the budget.

The Crowley ISD Board of Trustees will decide how the savings will be spent after the first year of the program is completed.
