Dear parents/guardians of current fifth-grade students, 

As we wrap up this school year, I want to let you know about an exciting opportunity in Crowley ISD that can greatly impact your child's educational journey as they enter middle school and beyond.

We strongly believe that in Crowley ISD, all students can learn at higher levels. That is why we are thrilled to launch the Advanced Math Program for every incoming sixth-grade student, starting in the 2024-25 school year.

Highlights

• Advanced Math: This two-year program is designed to prepare students to enroll in Algebra I by eighth grade.
  

• Automatic Enrollment: Incoming sixth-grade students in Crowley ISD will be automatically enrolled in one of our advanced math pathways. However, parents will have the choice to opt out of this automatic enrollment if they prefer for their child to instead take on-level math courses.

What are the benefits of taking an advanced math course in Crowley ISD?

• Gateway to opportunities: Data reveals that taking advanced math in middle and high school, and taking math all four years of high school, significantly increases students’ postsecondary success.

• More time to pursue college credit in high school: Students who take three hours of dual credit are three times more likely to enroll in college.

• Increases postsecondary access and wages: Students who take Algebra I in eighth grade are more likely to earn a college degree and see increased wages in the workplace (source: Texas Tech University, Feb. 2023)

What will my child learn in advanced math?
Instruction is focused on applying methods to examine and solve a variety of mathematical and real-world problems. Increased rigor, extended learning and faster pacing occur as students receive three years of math education in two years (sixth and seventh grade). This will allow them to then take Algebra I in eighth grade.

What kind of academic support will be offered in advanced math?
To ensure the success of all students, our middle schools have increased the amount of time for math instruction in sixth and seventh grade. In advanced math, students are more engaged because of the pace of the class and the structure of our math classes in our middle school math redesign. 

What are the next steps?

• Monday, May 20: Current fifth-grade families will receive more detailed information through a presentation and an in-depth video recording of the programming, benefits and transition into middle school.

• Tuesday, May 21: Our team will be available via Zoom at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. for current fifth-grade families to join us for an overview of the program and a question and answer session where we can walk alongside you in this incredible opportunity.
